KEY ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN THAILAND DATABASE

The Key Archaeological Sites in Thailand Database project was initiated in 2010 in order to provide basic information on archaeological sites in Thailand for researchers and the public. Upon realizing that most websites about Thai archaeology lack source citations and are primarily designed for tourism purposes, the SAC sought to establish a reliable digital resource supported by a comprehensive bibliography. The entries in the database have been carefully selected in order to present both well-known and lesser-known archaeological sites that are meaningful in contexts of Thai history and archaeological heritage. The database provides background on the archaeology, history, and tourism status of each site, and includes old photos from books and articles in addition to recent photos from field surveys.

Sites are still being selected and researched, and the database will be launched in April 2013. From 2010 to 2011, researchers surveyed sites in central Thailand; from 2011 to 2012, they visited key sites in the lower north as well as the eastern region; from 2012 to 2013, they are assessing sites in southern Thailand and the upper north; and in 2013, they will begin to survey in the northeast.
