           งานนำเสนอครั้งนี้เป็นบทบรรยายทางวิชาการของรองศาสตราจารย์แคเทอรีน เชียร์ (Catherine Scheer) นักมานุษยวิทยาของสำนักฝรั่งเศสแห่งปลายบุรพทิศ (EFEO) ภายใต้กรอบโครงการความร่วมมือระหว่าง EFEO และศูนย์มานุษยวิทยาสิรินธร (องค์การมหาชน) งานนำเสนอครั้งนี้ต่อยอดข้อสังเกตว่าด้วยการเปลี่ยนศาสนาของชนพื้นเมืองมาเป็นชาวคริสต์ภายใต้กลุ่มโครงการใหม่ชื่อ “ทางเลือกของชีวิตในชนบทของเอเชียใต้และเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้: ภาพสะท้อนของยุคหลังการพัฒนาผ่านการก่อตัวกลุ่มท้องถิ่นอันหลากหลาย” (Alternative life projects in rural South & Southeast Asia: Reflecting on post-development through diverse emplaced collectives) ซึ่งมุ่งทำความเข้าใจแบบปฏิบัติเนื่องในความเชื่อว่าด้วยจิตวิญญาณของกลุ่มชนพื้นถิ่นในการมีชีวิตในแบบที่ผิดแผกแตกต่าง (แนวทางเลือกอื่น) ไปจากรูปแบบสังคมที่พัฒนาในกระแสหลักภายใต้ความเปลี่ยนแปลงแบบเปรียบเทียบซึ่งข้ามพ้นพรมแดนรัฐชาติสมัยใหม่

Description (ENG):

           This presentation is a lecture by Associate Professor Catherine Scheer, an anthropologist at the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), organized within the framework of the new phase (2027–2030) of the 4-years collaborative project between the EFEO and the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre (Public Organization), continuing from the previous phase. The lecture ties preceding reflections on Christian conversion and indigenous identities to a new sub-project entitled “Alternative Life Projects in Rural South & Southeast Asia: Reflecting on Post-Development through Diverse Emplaced Collectives.” This collective project seeks, among others, to understand the spiritual practices and norms of indigenous and ethnic peoples who seek alternatives to dominant development, through a comparative perspective that transcends the boundaries of the modern nation-state.

           ทั่วทั้งภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ กลุ่มชนพื้นเมืองบนพื้นที่สูงยังคงธำรงอัตลักษณ์ของการเป็นผู้พิทักษ์ป่าและสิ่งแวดล้อม รวมทั้งความสัมพันธ์ทางความเชื่อเรื่องวิญญาณ (animism) ที่มีในระหว่างผู้คน ผืนดิน และจิตวิญญาณท้องถิ่นยังเป็นสิ่งที่ปรากฏให้เห็นได้อย่างเด่นชัดในการรณรงค์เรียกร้องสิทธิในที่ดิน อย่างไรก็ตาม ข้อเท็จจริงที่ว่าคนจำนวนไม่น้อยที่ลุกขึ้นมาปกป้องและสนับสนุนวิถีทางเช่นนี้อย่างแข็งขันกลับเป็น “ชาวคริสต์” คือปรากฏการณ์ที่ดูเป็นเรื่องน่าประหลาดใจ

           การบรรยายนี้จะเสนอข้อพิจารณาถึงจุดทาบตัดที่แฝงเร้นในระหว่างความเป็นชนพื้นเมืองและความเป็นชาวคริสต์ โดยจะใช้ข้อมูลจากงานวิจัยระยะยาวในพื้นที่ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของกัมพูชา ร่วมกับข้อสังเกตเบื้องต้นในภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย ร่วมกับการสำรวจการดำเนินงานขององค์กรพัฒนาเอกชน (NGO) นิกายโปรเตสแตนต์ และองค์กรคาทอลิก ซึ่งมีส่วนในการบ่มเพาะผู้นำชนพื้นเมืองขึ้นมา นอกจากนี้ผู้วิจัยจะตั้งคำถามว่าด้วยคำสอนของศาสนาคริสต์ว่าส่งผลต่อประชากรบนพื้นที่สูงอย่างไร ซึ่งไม่ใช่เพียงอิทธิพลต่อวิธีที่พวกเขาจัดวางความสัมพันธ์กับผืนโลกเท่านั้น แต่ยังรวมไปถึงค่านิยมและรูปแบบการเคลื่อนไหวทางสังคมของพวกเขาด้วย ทั้งนี้ องค์ความรู้เชิงลึกที่ได้จากกัมพูชาจะถูกนำมาใช้กำหนดแนวทางและการเปิดประเด็นคำถามสำหรับการศึกษาวิจัยที่จะเกิดขึ้นในประเทศไทยในระยะใหม่ต่อไป

Resume of “Inconspicuous spiritual ecopolitics: Indigeneity and Christianity in highland Cambodia and Thailand”:

           Across Southeast Asia, indigenous highland peoples uphold identities of forest guardians and environmental stewards while animated relations to the land and its spirits appear upfront within land rights advocacy. The fact that a considerable number of those who strongly defend and advocate this particular way of life are Christians may be puzzling at first sight.

           To reflect upon inconspicuous intersections of indigeneity and Christianity, this talk draws upon long-term research in Northeastern Cambodia and preliminary observations in the North of Thailand. It explores the work of a Protestant NGO and a Catholic organization, out of which sprung indigenous leaders. It asks how Christian teachings have affected highland inhabitants, not only their ways of relating to the world, but also their values and modes of engagement. Insights drawn from Cambodia aim to offer avenues of inquiry for forthcoming research in Thailand.

Biography:

           Catherine Scheer is associate professor (UK: senior lecturer) at the École française d’Extrême-Orient since 2019 (https://www.efeo.fr/membre/catherine-scheer/?lang=en).

           Since 2008, she has been conducted ethnographic research in a commune in the highlands of Cambodia, where indigenous inhabitants have faced the transformation of their land into industrial plantations, forms the basis of a book project. The Bunong villagers have not only sought to defend their living space by resorting to national and international law, but have also implemented rituals to repair and heal their relationships, which have been disrupted by the ongoing changes. These rituals will be the focus of the book, as a mode of action in a tense and uncertain context.

           As part of an ANR project entitled ‘Alternative life projects in rural South & Southeast Asia: Reflecting on post-development through a study of diverse emplaced collectives’, C. Scheer will conduct research with an indigenous association in north-eastern Cambodia and a Catholic organisation working with hill tribe minorities in northern Thailand. She coordinates the work package dealing with (cosmo)political imaginaries and shifting subjectivities.

           C. Scheer is collaborating with the Bunong Indigenous Peoples Association (BIPA) on a geographical and audio-visual documentation project focusing on the forest cemeteries and spirit domains that constitute the ancestral lands of the Bunong people in Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia. This involves reflecting on the concept of ‘cultural landscape’ and, more generally, on heritage preservation as potential tools for protecting powerful sites.

           Ethno-historical research is continuing with Bunong witnesses in Cambodia, both on the involvement of mountain minorities in the Khmer Republic army and on the interactions between inhabitants of the highlands of Vietnam and Cambodia after the reunification of Vietnam and the seizure of power by the Khmer Rouge in 1975C.
