In this talk, Vu Phuong Nga presented three projects about intangible heritage initiated by the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (VME) in Hanoi, Vietnam... The first related to an exhibition on social life in the ancient quarter in Hanoi, in which members of the community were engaged to document and to narrate their experiences of changes in the urban socio-cultural fabric since the 1970s. The other two projects concerned VDO documentation and visual education in ethnic Thai and Yao villages. . All stages of the project were based on a process of community engagement.

Vu Phuong Nga concluded that a guiding principle for safeguarding ICH is to reveal the many “voices” and different perspectives of culture bearers. It is also important to strike a balance between the process and the product, and to be aware that the ideas of communities may differ significantly from those of researchers/filmmakers/curators. Time and patience are also crucial to conduct the ICH projects.
