Abstract

The article investigated food consumption and nutrition in children and mothers of the Karen ethnic group at Sanepong Village, Kanchanaburi Province. Direct and indirect data based on muti-disciplinary triangulation were used to compare with standard nutrition data.

It was found that most food and raw materials found in the area contained sufficient nutrients, except iron. Nevertheless, most children were found to lack necessary nutrients, such as vitamins. One factor for this lack was the establishment of the Thung Yai Naresuan National Forest Reserve, making the villagers unable to hunt or collect forest products and thus reducing the amount of their food. Additionally, it was found that mothers should be taught correct ways to raise children, particularly on child-mother relationships because it directly affected consumption of sweets in children.
