Abstract

This article examined the structure of cultural identity and ethnic boundary maintenace of the Tai Nuea in the Yunnan-Burmese periphery. The focus was in the Dehong Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan province, China. The ethnic group identifies itself as "Tai Nuea" and clearly distinguishes those in Burma as "Tai Tau". This expression is made to maintain their ethnic identity with geographical dimensions to explain it. Additionally, there is an identification mechanism by comparing cultural and political differences between China and Burma. Being absorbed and close to the Chinese culture is a mechanism to help them maintain their conscience that they are different from Tai Tau, who have been influenced by Burmese politics and culture. Classifying those in Burma as Tai Tau is an ethnic classification system created by Tai Nuea, which has a cultural and political boundary among those residing in the Yunnan-Burma periphery (pp. 105-106).
