Abstract

The communities in the Pa Sak River Basin affected by the construction of Pa Sak Dam are called Thai Berng or Thai Derng or Thai Korat. The major communities are Manao Wan and Khok Salung Villages in Phathananikhom District and Chaibadarn Village in Chaibadarn District.

Historical and archeological evidence revealed that the communities settled there during the Ayuthaya Period (the 18th and the 19th centuries). Due to its location and water transportation route to other cities, the area was more densely populated because of the migration of other ethnic groups, especially the Thai-Lao groups having settled at Makok Wan, Tha Kruat and Kaeng Phak Kut Villages.

The Thai Berng communities in the river basin had socio-cultural interaction with others in neighboring areas through marriage, rituals, administration and being on a transportation route. The Thai Berng identity includes language, traditions, beliefs, social wisdom, architecture, literature, art, dress, music, play and sports.

It was further found that the ethnic culture is a mixture of the Central Thai culture in the Chao Phraya River Basin and the Thai Korat culture as well as its own culture.
