Emergent Urban Community Rights in Bangkok: Case of the Mon, West African, Sikh and Muslim Communities in Bangkok

Dr. Michael Hayes   Center for Human Rights Studies and Social Development, Mahidol University

This project aims to investigate the factors, which allow urban minorities to gain acceptance for their cultural practices by exploring and comparing the status of cultural rights in three urban minority groups in Bangkok. The groups are selected for their diversity: firstly, the Sikh community which is a well established group with high levels of respect for their culture; secondly the Mon community which has long historical connections to Thailand but still face some discrimination due to their status as predominantly migrant workers; and finally the West African community who are a very recent, group facing significant discrimination and with limited ability to practice their culture.
