Dr. Peter Vail

Peter Vail serves as Culture and Rights researcher as well as resource people. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the University Scholars Program at the National University of Singapore. He received his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Cornell University and is currently teaching on the topics of language death and language, culture, and the idea of the native. Peter’s main interests lie in discourse and social practice, identity politics, language shift, and code-switching, with a geographical focus in mainland Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. As a grant recipient of the Thai Research Fund, he is currently completing a project entitled “Cambodian Views of Thailand: Identifying Discourse and Ideology in Social and Linguistic Practice.”
