The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre (public organization) (hereafter "SAC") is an non-profit academic institution that was initially established by Silapakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand in 1991 in commemoration of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's 36th birthday. The Centre was established in Her Royal Highness's honor and seeks to fullfil her wish to establish and develop a national institution responsible for the systematic gathering, processing and servicing of anthropological data. SAC is committed to fostering academic progress through the extension of anthropological knowledge, through the propagation of new research and findings, through the encouragement and support of development in research studies, and in the accumluation of an extensive collection of anthropology materials (with a focus on Thailand and Southeast Asia).
History
In 1992, the government approved the project and issued a decree to formally establish SAC as an official government agency under the supervision of Silpakorn University. Originally, SAC's institutional status was equivalent to a University department or faculty. In 1994, Silpakorn University decided to revise the institutional structure and status of the Centre in order to improve efficiency, flexibility, and raise the level of the Centre to that of equivalent international institutions. As a result, SAC became a non-govermental organisation beginning in 1996 with the goal of becoming Thailand's premier modern resource centre for the research and study of anthropology and related fields such as history, archaeology and art and culture.

The Centre became fully functional in 1999. It was fully equipped with building space, qualified staff, and modern facilities, which include: library services, permanent exhibitions, meeting rooms, audio-visual facilities, information databases and multi-media resources. On 9 March 1999, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the formal opening of the Centre. Since then the Centre continues to engage in activities in the service of scholarship and for benefit of Thai society. Regular SAC activities include exhibitions, seminars, lectures, conferences, original research, publication, and the collection and cataloging of anthropological and related cultural materials.
In 2000, at the end of its initial five-year term as a non-government organisation, the Centre's Executive Committee proposed a project to establish the Centre as an independent public agency under the Ministry of University Affairs in order to continue and expand its academic and public missions. In November 2000 the government issued a decree to formally establish SAC as a public organisation in accordance with the Public Organisation Law of Thailand. Currently, SAC is an autonomous organisation, under the supervision of the Ministry of University Affairs, and its management system consists of a managing committee that controls and oversees its operations in accordance with the objectives set forth in its charter.
