Review หอเกียรติภูมิรถไฟ

The Hall of Railway Heritage Museum was established with the co-operation and formation of the group of people who are fond of trains – the “We Love Trains Club”. Over 40 years back, this building had been designated as a train museum; unfortunately, later on some changes took place resulting in the building being deserted – until Mr. Sanpasiri Wiriyasiri and the “We Love Trains Club” members proposed the idea of using it as a proper museum. The Hall of Railway Heritage Museum was officially opened in 1990.

The “We Love Trains Club” members went around looking for ruined trains, retrieved and restored them before putting them on display. Inside the museum, one can see several types of wagons, steam-engined locomotives, the first diesel-powderd locomotives, hospital trains (Ror Por and Jor Por trains were special trains used for special purposes), library trains. Very interesting is a hospital train. King Rama V ordered some gold teak wood from Brazil, then had the train manufactured and assembled in England, and finally transported by ship to Bangkok via Malaya. The train was meant to ply outer towns and provinces giving medical services to the people. Also on display is the first train peg in Thailand excavated the time the Hua Lumpong underground station was being built. There is an interesting engine model “10089”. When a Japanese train engineer expert saw it, he exclaimed, “This maybe the last stream locomotive ever built that has never been used.” He even added that this model had been the last locomotive the Japanese company Kyosankokeo had built before it was closed down. After some detailed dissembled parts had been checked, there were really no traces that the train had ever been used. So it was concluded that the train had been ordered by a sugarcane factory and meant to transport sugarcanes from the plantation to the sugar plant – but apparently it was never used so.

Due to health problems, since 2004 Mr. Sanpasiri has had his heir Mr. Julsiri to continue the Club’s work. At present, the museum has met with a lot of problems especially financial. The restoration, the maintenance, the cleaning, and others mean big expenses. So the supervisors still struggle to keep the history going on and to maintain the glory of Thai trains – a legacy the younger generations could be proud of.
