The museum was founded by Khun Somsak Sibunruang, whose grandfather was an Isan native and itinerant merchant. He was impressed by his grandfather’s austerity and self-sufficiency. Growing up in such an environment, he was enchanted by the folk wisdom and local heritage. This led him to become a serious collector of antiques by purchasing them, asking for them, exchanging them and having them donated.

The people from the Northeast of Thailand consume a large amount of mushrooms each year. Several types of mushrooms have been used medicinally but very little supporting data has been published in scientific journals. Mahasarakham University is located in an area of great mushroom diversity and would like to be a leader on conservation, dissemination, and application of knowledge about mushrooms.

The Cultural Centre of Khon Kaen, Kanlayanawat School, has a great selection of ancient Isan books. The personnel, moreover, know the Thai Noi language and are able to translate the scripts that appear in the palm leaf texts, thus making it very useful for those interested in the studies of the history, the ways of thinking, and the Isan culture, through these ancient scripts.

This Local Heritage Preservation Hall was originated by the former abbot of Wat Sa-at who had a passion for antique collecting. Whenever he was on his trips to deliver sermons in any community, if he happened to come across some valuable stuff but discarded or neglected by the owners, he would ask to take it back to the temple. When the number of the things grew, with the help of the local people, he set up a local museum.
