Culture and Rights: Thailand in Comparative Perspective

This June the Culture and Rights Project will hold a 5 day workshop on ‘Culture and Rights: Thailand in Comparative Perspective.’ Opening with a Public Forum on June 21, keynote speakers will delve into contemporary developments and challenges to the field, presenting on the following topics: Anthropology of Rights; Culture Heritage and Rights; Ethnicity, Language and Culture; Law Violence and Social Movements; Community Rights and Cultural Rights; Heritage Rights and Indigenous Claims.

The following four days of the workshop will provide a chance for project participants to take part in an intensive seminar which will focus on exploring the nexus of the culture and rights theoretical debates and building practical skills. On days 2 and 3, project researchers will meet with the resource people to deepen their knowledge on their selected topics and further develop individual research proposals. Days 4 and 5, the final days of the workshop, will be spent visiting 2 selected field sites in the Bangkok area. The workshop will close with a short debriefing session as well as planning for the next phase of research in the field sites.
